On Friday I attended the fantastic launch of the Tyred UK campaign with my constituent Frances Molloy. Please follow the link below to hear Frances' moving story. Her 18 year old son Michael was on the way back from a weekend of fun at the Bestival music festival when he tragically killed after a 19 year old tyre on the coach he was on burst causing a severe crash.
The tragedy that Frances and her family went through has led to her starting a campaign to change the law so that old, dangerous tyres will no longer be allowed on our roads. It is shocking to think that currently there is no limit on how old a tyre can be and that the only measure of a tyres quality is the amount of tread it has. It is this gap in the law that has lead to many road accidents and deaths in the UK.
This is a wide reaching public safety issue that can be fixed with a minor change to the law. It is unsurprising that the campaign has already gathered support from across Liverpool and the country.
I will continue to work with Frances Malloy and other members of her campaign to see this through to the end so that no one is ever put a risk by at old tyre again. Please sign up to support the campaign on the Tyred website - Tyred.org.uk - twitter - twitter/tyreduk - and Facebook - facebook.com/tyreduk.
