Fighting for the Tyred Campaign

Two weeks ago I tried to secure a second reading for my 10 Minute Rule Bill to ban dangerous old tyres being used on public service vehicles. Sadly, as expected, a Tory Whip objected to the Bill indicating that they do not support for this change in the law.

It is clear from a question I asked the Transport Minister that the Govt are using the excuse that they need more research to enable them to resist changing the law. However, they’ve said this before and then simply failed to commission the research.

I wanted more information on what research would be done so I asked the Secretary of State for Transport two questions, what the research would be and how much of the departments budget would be set aside to carry it out. In his answer he said that the research looking into the effect of ageing on tyres would not be completed until the end of 2018 at the earliest.

This is a totally unnecessary delay, the coroner who investigated the Bestival coach crash stated the 19 year old tyre that burst was the only cause of the crash and suggested that the law should be changed to restrict the age of tyres. It is clear that old tyres are dangerous, the Government are reluctant to change the law and are using this research as an excuse for inaction.

The Tories won't be able to stop this simple change in the law from being made, the Tyred campaign is gathering more support than ever the campaign now has the backing of Councillors, MPs, MEPs and businesses from all over Merseyside and from around the UK. It’s time for the Government to see sense, old tyres kill, a change in the law won’t cost the public purse, and it will save lives.
