Bishop James Jones Publishes Hillsborough Family Experiences Report

Bishop James Jones’ report into the experiences of the families and survivors of the Hillsborough Disaster has been published.

You can read the read the full report HERE

I gave written evidence to the review in view of the fact that I have known some of the affected families since 1990 when I was a junior lawyer at a firm that was involved in some of the original civil actions. And I’ve been involved in the Parliamentary campaign for justice since I was elected in 1997.

I welcome the 25 recommendations. I particularly welcome those relating to ensuring truth and transparency by public authorities and the police, the respectful treatment of bereaved families, and the need for a drastic change to the culture within public bodies that prioritises reputation over accountability.

I hope that the Government implements the recommendations set out by Bishop James Jones.

No one affected by disasters in future should have to go through the long traumatic fight for truth, justice and accountability that the families and survivors of Hillsborough have been forced to undertake. I hope that the publication of this report is at least a step toward making sure that they don’t.
